Soft-Close Drawers vs Standard Drawers
Soft-close is a damper built into the drawer glide or hinge that catches the last few inches of travel and eases the drawer shut. It is the most-requested upgrade in modern kitchens, and for good reason.
What actually differs
A standard glide lets the drawer slam. That impact is what loosens joints, chips finish, and knocks drawer faces out of alignment over years of use. A soft-close glide absorbs that energy, so the box and the face stay where they belong.

- Safety: fingers do not get pinched in a closing drawer

Undermount vs side-mount
Most quality soft-close systems are undermount, meaning the hardware is hidden below the drawer box. You see solid wood sides instead of a metal rail, you get full extension to the back of the drawer, and the load rating is usually higher. Side-mount roller glides are cheaper but stop short of full extension.
When standard glides make sense
Rarely. In a garage, utility room, or shop cabinet where cost matters more than feel, standard glides are fine. In a kitchen or bathroom you use every day, soft-close pays for itself in longevity alone.
