Refacing vs. Refinishing vs. Replacing

If your cabinet boxes are in good shape but the doors look dated, you don't need to rip everything out. Refacing gives you new doors and fronts in a new style. Refinishing re-coats the doors you already have. Full replacement makes sense when the boxes or layout are the problem.

  • Refinishing: new paint or stain on existing doors. Lowest cost, same door style.
  • Refacing: new doors, drawer fronts, veneer, and hardware. New style, existing boxes.
  • Replacing: all new custom cabinets. Best when boxes are damaged or the layout needs to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cabinet refacing?

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and replaces the parts you see: doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. The exposed frames and end panels are covered with a matching veneer so everything looks new.

What is the difference between refacing and refinishing?

Refinishing keeps your current doors and re-coats them with new paint or stain. Refacing replaces the doors and drawer fronts entirely, which lets you change the door style, not just the color.

Is refacing cheaper than new cabinets?

Usually, yes. Because the boxes, countertops, and plumbing stay in place, refacing typically costs well below a full cabinet replacement. We give an itemized estimate after a free in-home visit.

When should I replace cabinets instead of refacing?

If the boxes are water-damaged, sagging, or the layout doesn't work for you, new custom cabinets are the better investment. We'll tell you honestly which option fits your kitchen.

How long does refacing take?

Most kitchens are refaced in a few days on site once the new doors and fronts are built. Your kitchen stays usable for most of the project.
