How Much Weight Can Kitchen Cabinets Hold?
Capacity depends far more on how a cabinet is mounted than on the cabinet itself. A well-built wall cabinet screwed into studs behaves very differently from the same cabinet hung on drywall anchors.
Typical capacities
These are working figures for quality plywood cabinetry installed correctly. Budget particleboard cabinets should be de-rated substantially.
- Wall cabinet, properly anchored to studs: roughly 500-600 lbs total
- Base cabinet with countertop load transferred to the floor: 500+ lbs
- Individual 3/4" plywood shelf, 30" span: about 50-75 lbs before deflection
- Drawer on quality undermount glides: 75-100 lbs, per the glide rating
What limits capacity
In practice the failure point is almost never the box. It is the mounting screws, the nailer rail, the drawer glides, or the shelf pins. Two 2-1/2" structural screws per stud through a solid hardwood nailer is the difference between a cabinet that holds and one that pulls off a wall.
Heavy-load situations
Stone countertops, cast iron cookware storage, small appliance garages, and wine storage all push loads higher. For those, we specify thicker shelves, additional vertical supports, heavier glide ratings, and extra wall anchoring during design rather than after.

Correctly anchored plywood cabinets hold hundreds of pounds; capacity is decided by mounting, glides, and shelf spans.
